ITINERARY

October 20

As you exit the international terminal at Kotoka International

Airport, you will be greeted with a smile by your Uprise tour guide.

You will then head to a comfortable nearby hotel to settle in.

Depending on your arrival time, today may include your first

Ghanaian meal or a brief cultural orientation session to help

prepare you for the days ahead.

October 21

This morning you will explore Accra, the bustling capital of Ghana.

You will begin your tour at the frenetic Makola Market, Accra’s

biggest market. This will give you a glance into the daily lives of

Ghanaians as they hustle from stall to stall, bargaining for every

product you can imagine. Next, you will visit the National Museum

of Ghana. This newly renovated museum is home to many

interesting historic exhibits from Ghana’s pre-colonial times to the

present. Here you will have a more comprehensive outlook on the

rich culture and history of Ghana. (Dinner is not included on this

day. Your guide will suggest a range of options.)

October 22

This morning you will depart Accra on a fifty-minute flight to

Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region. Upon arrival at the

Tamale Airport, you will be greeted with a smile by an Uprise guide

before heading to a local bakery for a quick breakfast. Welcome to

Tamale, a Muslim-majority city that serves as the cultural and

economic center of Northern Ghana! Your first stops on your city

tour include the Tamale Central Mosque, as well as the Tamale

Market, where you will see traditional smocks, fabrics, beads, and a

wide range of food products. Your final stop in Tamale will be at the

Tamale Art Market, where you will have a opportunity to shop for

handicrafts, jewelry, masks, paintings, arts and more. Later today,

you will depart Tamale for Mole National Park, the crown jewel of

Ghana’s national park system, and the largest wildlife reserve in

Ghana. At 4,500 square kilometers, the park is home to elephants,

patas monkeys, baboons, vervet monkeys, crocodiles, hartebeest,

and hundreds of species of birds. Upon arrival, you will settle into

your comfortable accommodation for dinner and a good night’s

rest.

October 23

Your second day in Mole National Park will start with an early morning

walking safari. This safari starts early in order to spot elephants and birds

while enjoying the sunrise. Accompanied by a gun-toting park ranger,

you can approach wildlife at safe distances. If you are lucky, you may spot

crocodiles around the waterholes. After two hours of walking, you will

head back to your hotel for breakfast. This afternoon will include a

peaceful canoe safari along the Mole River that will take you to more

remote parts of the park. Later, you will visit the village of Mognori for a

guided tour. This tour will give you a clear picture of the ways of life of

families in Northern Ghana. You may have the chance to learn traditions

and customs such as weaving, making shea butter etc. If he is available,

you will meet the traditional chief of the village for a quick handshake

before heading back to the park. Later today, you will embark on your

final driving safari, in hopes of spotting more wildlife deep in the park.

October 24

This morning you will depart Mole National Park and embark on the long

drive to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region. On your way, you will

stop over for a picnic lunch at the Kintampo Waterfalls. After descending

120 steps to the third stage of the falls, you will be able to splash in the

waters below. You will then continue your journey south to Kumasi. Upon

arrival, you will settle in your comfortable accommodation for dinner and

a good night’s sleep to prepare you for the days ahead.

October 25

Today you will visit the palace museum located at Manhyia Palace, the

residence of the chief of the Ashantis. Here you will learn about the rich

history and traditions of the Ashanti people, in addition to how they

fought and traded with Europeans over gold and slaves. Later today, you

will head outside of Kumasi to local Ashanti villages, where you will learn

about kente weaving traditions. A famous traditional cloth, Kente is

mostly used during important ceremonies such as weddings, festivals

and funerals. You will visit an ancient village known as Adanwomase that

first introduced kente spinning and weaving. Here you will have the

opportunity to try your hand at weaving. Next, you will participate in a

Sankofa (going back to your roots) naming ceremony. This ceremony will

be attended by the local chief and elders of the nearby village. Each

guest will be given a traditional name. (Dinner is not included on this

day.)

October 26

This morning you will depart Kumasi and travel south to Cape Coast. Before your arrival, you will stop

over in the town of Assin Manso on the banks of the Pra River. This river is the site where captive

slaves traveling south to Cape Coast were made to take their last bath before entering the slave

castles to wait for ships to the Americas. Finally you will continue to Cape Coast where you will tour

the Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes in 1653. Your castle guide will take you on a tour through

the rooms formerly occupied by slaves bound for the New World. This castle also houses the West

African Historical Museum.

Overnight: Coconut Grove Beach Resort

October 27

This morning you will head to Kakum National Park, home to seven rope bridges in the forest

canopy. Accompanied by a park ranger, you will cross the bridges as you wander through the canopy

and marvel at the surrounding forest. Known for its excellent birdwatching, Kakum is home to

antelope, monkeys, and various other species. Next, you will have a chance to relax and reflect. It’s

beach time! You will have ample time to sit on a palm-lined beach and watch the waves crash into

the sand. You can also wander up the beaches and watch local fishermen coming in and out,

unloading their catch, and preparing their nets. Today’s activities will also include a traditional

cultural performance in the comfort of your hotel. This performance will involve a wide range of

Ghanaian and West African traditional dance, this will take you deep into the culture and music of

the local people. (Dinner is not included on this day.)

Overnight: Coconut Grove Beach Resort

October 28

Today you will head back to Accra, waving to quiet fishing villages along the coast. Upon arrival, you

will visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Here your Uprise

guide will teach you about the rise of Ghana’s independence leader and first president, Kwame

Nkrumah. Next, you will visit the W.E.B Du Bois Centre and learn about the life of W.E.B. Du Bois and

his influence on the Pan-African movement. Finally, you will visit the Centre for National Culture for

an opportunity to bargain for paintings, masks, and other crafts from around Ghana. This evening

you will head to the airport, where you will say goodbye to your Uprise guide and fly off with new

memories to last a lifetime!
